The Application
Hampel operates a high-output plastic extrusion and thermoforming facility, producing large, formed plastic components. Their extrusion lines run continuously in a dusty, debris-heavy environment, making motor reliability critical.
The Challenge
Last year, a 700 HP DC motor failed on one of Hampel’s primary extrusion lines. In plastics manufacturing, downtime can cost thousands of dollars per day.
Although the industry is shifting toward AC motors, Hampel was still operating a DC-driven system. Converting to AC would have meant higher costs, engineering changes, and extended downtime—none of which were feasible in the moment.
The T-T Electric Solution
T-T Electric was able to respond immediately because we stock large-frame AC and DC motors up to 750 HP. DC motors above 500 HP are increasingly difficult to source—but we had the exact 700 HP DC motor in stock.
This allowed Hampel to:
- Replace the failed motor quickly
- Avoid extended downtime
- Keep their existing DC system running without disruption
Our team supported installation and helped minimize production interruption during a high-pressure outage.
Beyond the Motor
In addition to the motor replacement, T-T Electric also provided:
- Replacement air filters for the dusty extrusion environment
- An Avtron HS45 encoder, installed on the motor
- Coordinated support across motors, encoders, and application needs
As the Hampel team put it: “It’d be nice to get everything in one place.” That’s exactly the value T-T Electric delivers.
The Takeaway
When a critical motor fails, availability matters.
By stocking large DC and AC motors and backing them with experienced application support, T-T Electric helped Hampel get back online fast—proving reliability isn’t just about technology trends, but about being ready when customers need it most.
